High-Risk Pregnancies
If your pregnancy is considered high risk, Mercy's perinatologists (physicians who specialize in high-risk pregnancies) are available around the clock to care for your baby during and after birth. These doctors work closely with moms to do whatever is possible to ensure a healthy, happy baby.
Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Special Care Nursuries
Our Special Care Nursery at Mercy General Hospital allows us to provide extra observation and treatment for newborns compromised by illness or underdevelopment. We'll make sure these infants are getting the nourishment they need until they begin to grow at a healthy pace; provide antibiotic therapy, if needed; or supplement their oxygen until they are breathing well on their own.
More advanced care is also available when needed. Our Sacramento hospitals are equipped with two Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), located at Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael and Methodist Hospital in the south area of Sacramento. These units are equipped with technologically advanced equipment and specially trained staff to care for infants who are premature or seriously ill. In the event of a premature birth, our neonatologists (physicians who specialize in premature and high risk babies) are ready to care for the tiniest of newborns. Because our NICUs are geographically dispersed, babies who need specialized care can remain close to home, allowing you and your loved ones to spend more time with your infant.
