Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute

Cardiac Catheterization (Cath) Lab

Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute provides exceptional diagnostic and interventional care for our heart patients and can often prevent the need for open heart surgery through a successful interventional procedure. In our cardiac catheterization laboratories, cardiologists search the inside of arteries for plaque build-up that may threaten the blood flow to the heart or the peripheral circulation.

The cardiologists use digital technology, along with intravascular ultrasound and intracardiac echocardiography, to guide them in sophisticated treatments that include angioplasty, atherectomy, stent placement (including drug eluting stents), and atrial septal defect closures. These procedures are some of the most recent breakthoughs in interventional cardiology.

The Cath Lab team consists of specially trained registered nurses and technicians who assist the cardiologist and also provide heart monitoring, sedation and support to the patient during the procedure. In addition to the current therapies endorsed by the FDA, Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute participates in a wide range of research studies designed to improve the treatment options for our patients. Participating in these studies ensures that we are offering the latest therapy available. More than 3,000 cardiac catheter procedures are performed each year at Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute.
