Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute

Cardiac Surgery

Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute (MHVI) has built a renowned surgical program by following a philosophy of providing specialized care, supported by dedicated nursing care, throughout surgery and recovery. We provide one of the largest cardiac programs in the United States and have the highest volumes in central and northern California, completing more than 1,000 heart surgeries each year. Our outcomes are also among the nation's most successful. Mercy attracts patients from throughout California and the nation based on our reputation of dedication to our mission - providing quality outcomes and compassionate care to the communities we serve, regardless of economic or social status.

Bypass surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed, which improves the blood supply to the heart muscle by re-routing the blood flow in obstructed coronary arteries. In addition to bypass surgery, Mercy's highly trained cardiac surgeons are also known for complex valve repair and replacement surgery, leading the West Coast in the number of these procedures performed, and for advanced surgical techniques that improve patient outcomes, reduce patient recovery time and decrease hospitalization time. Each year, MHVI performs more than 1,000 open heart surgeries.

Innovative and proven new techniques are also part of cardiac surgery services provided at MHVI, including minimally invasive and off-pump coronary bypass surgeries, as well as laser revascularization.

Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute's cardiac surgeons work exclusively at Mercy, and many have a long history with the surgery program. Cardiac surgery is performed in technologically advanced operating suites located directly next to the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit, ensuring efficient and quality care. Our surgical services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
