A Commitment to Research

Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute is involved in many ongoing clinical research trials, giving our patients the opportunity to be involved with new technologies that improve the treatment of heart disease. Mercy participated in many of the original coronary stent trials in the 1990s, when coronary stents first came into use. These were groundbreaking clinical trials that allowed device companies to establish this new technology. As a result, stents became more flexible, deliverable and conformable, leading to improved patient outcomes. More recently, important coronary stent trials with drug eluting stents have shown that patients can avoid further cath lab procedures or open heart surgery.

Some of our other critical clinical trials have included drug trials for hypertension or heart failure; new devices to clear coronary arteries of blockages; devices to treat vein grafts in patients who have already had bypass surgery; new pacermaker and defibrillator devices; catheters for atrial fibrillation ablation; and new ways to use diagnostic technology to improve disease identification.

The clinical results, data collection and analysis have promoted our institution as one of the leaders in the country for cardiovascular services and keep Mercy at the forefront of clinical practice. In addition, our research program is completely self-supporting and has contributed substantially to saving thousands of dollars in medical device costs.

Mercy strongly believes in the benefits of clinical research and is pleased to be able to offer participation to all patients who may potentially fit into a study protocol. Our stellar reputation among drug and device companies gives Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute the opportunity to be involved with new technologies from the ground floor and offer them to our patients sooner.
