A Commitment to Research
Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute is involved in many ongoing clinical research trials, giving our patients the opportunity to be involved with new technologies that improve the treatment of heart disease.
For example, important coronary stent trials with drug eluting stents have shown that patients can avoid further cath lab procedures or open heart surgery, and radiation trials have proven to be a tremendous success for patients with in-stent restenosis (a re-narrowing of the coronary arteries after stenting).
Some of our other critical trials include drug trials for hypertension or heart failure; new devices to clear coronary arteries of blockages; and devices to treat vein grafts in patients who have already had bypass surgery.
The clinical results, data collection and analysis have promoted our institution as one of the leaders in the country for cardiovascular services and keep Mercy at the forefront of clinical practice. In addition, our research program is completely self-supporting and has contributed substantially to saving thousands of dollars in medical device costs.
Mercy strongly believes in the benefits of clinical research and is pleased to be able to offer participation to all patients who may potentially fit into a study protocol. Our stellar reputation among drug and device companies gives Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute the opportunity to be involved with new technologies from the ground floor and offer them to our patients sooner.
