Helpful Information for Surgery Patients

Should you require hospitalization for surgery, the care team at Mercy General Hospital has developed a comprehensive program to guide and assist you through your surgery and hospital stay so that you may have a speedy recovery, returning home as quickly as possible. Each patient receives a treatment and recovery plan tailored to meet his or her individual needs.

Before Admission

  • Tests - you will have one or more blood tests and a chest X-ray; your doctor may also perform an EKG to monitor your heart
  • Paperwork - You will receive an information packet and all forms you need to complete prior to surgery
  • Education - You will be asked to attend a class to learn the roles of the different members of your care team. You will also learn how to prepare for your surgery, what happens during your procedure, and what to expect and do after your surgery

Day of Surgery

Tests - Before surgery, your blood will be drawn for one or more tests. After surgery, you may have an X-ray

Activities:

  • You may NOT resume smoking
  • A nurse will prepare you for surgery by placing an intravenous line (IV) in your arm. A urine tube (catheter) may be inserted and your bladder emptied
  • Your bed may be fitted with an overhead trapeze
  • You may have heel protectors and special stockings put on
  • Your surgical wound will be drained by a portable drain
  • You will receive blood transfusions only if necessary. Your doctor will discuss this with you

After Surgery

  • Pain management - Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate medications and you will learn other methods to manage your pain
  • Getting up - You will learn how to get in and out of bed, walk and how much weight you can put on your leg, if you've had a joint replacement
  • Exercises - You will begin your deep breathing exercises, or arm and leg exercises, if necessary for you. You will also review how to use any equipment you may need at home. You may NOT resume smoking
  • Your Recovery - Our care team will work with you to achieve a level of independence and self-confidence in performing self-care activities such as bathing, dressing, eating and walking on varied surfaces
