Caring for the Future

In the spirit of tireless dedication to exceptional standards, Alex G. Spanos has a true commitment to helping communities around the country and the world. Throughout his storied life, he has donated millions to benefit charities and civic organizations. One of his firmest beliefs is that professional and financial success should be accompanied by a duty to give back to the community. He has received many awards and honors in recognition of his charitable acts, but he believes that the most important reward is found in the satisfaction of being able to help when help is needed.

Mercy General Hospital is regarded as having one of the highest quality cardiac programs in the nation and has the largest interventional cardiology program and second largest cardiac surgery program in the state, due to its outstanding clinical outcomes. However, the program is operating in constrained space in aging buildings and is not configured to provide modern services that support current and future healthcare technology. Mercy General's cardiovascular program has a very high level of demand and needs a modern, state-of-the-art facility in order to continue to meet the needs of the community. By building the Alex G. Spanos Heart Center, Mercy General can provide more convenient and timely access to heart care for all who need it and provide an environment that reflects the latest advances in cardiovascular technology.

In addition, Mercy General's East Wing building, which currently houses more inpatient hospital beds than any of the other buildings on the campus, is designed and constructed in a manner that makes it cost prohibitive to retrofit or remodel for indefinite use. To take this wing out of service, however, it is necessary to provide replacement beds. The Alex G. Spanos Heart Center will provide modern replacement beds for most of the beds in the East Wing, allowing the hospital to maintain the large majority of its beds in continuous service and continue to provide the high level of excellence our hospital and our heart program are known for.
