Volunteer Services

The Volunteer Services Department is a valuable asset to Mercy General Hospital. Every volunteer has a special place in helping run a community hospital with the donation of his or her time. Mercy General has been a part of the Sacramento Community for more than 100 years. The Mercy Guild is more than 50 years old, and our Volunteer Services Department was established in 1985.

Whether you volunteer in a nursing unit, the cafeteria or filing medical records you are helping Mercy General run more efficiently and allowing more time for direct patient care. Last year the junior, adult and Mercy Guild volunteers donated an incredible 38,424 hours of their time!

Our volunteer team is a diverse group of high school and college students, retirees and working professionals. Some of our volunteers have been with us for more than 10 years. When asked why they continue to volunteer year after year, the number one answer is: "Because it makes me feel good." You can read more about what they say below.

Are you ready to feel good? Give Volunteer Services a call at (916) 453-4559 and join our team!

"I love that no matter what your job is you are always helping the hospital. The feeling that I am aiding an amazing service makes me feel incredible!"
- Mark, Jr. Volunteer

"All seven of my children were born at Mercy General. Subsequently, I went to work as a nurse for Mercy General and remained there until retirement. I began volunteering in 1995 - it was one way for me to give back a small portion of what I have received from Mercy. Mercy has always been like a second family to me and I will always be grateful for the presence of Mercy in my life."
- Cathy, Volunteer for 10 years

"Spending time at Mercy has been the most enjoyable and fulfilling volunteering I have done by far. The staff makes me feel important and useful, and they are patiently open to any and all questions I might have. Getting a chance to experience the positive side of life at a hospital is an experience that has helped open doors for my future career goals."
- Audrey, Jr. Volunteer
